Carmel Mountain Ranch Country Club

This Ron Fream design in the hills of San Diego first opened to the public in 1986, and has since earned a reputation for provided country club like conditions and service at a reasonable price. Hilly, tight and challenging, this San Diego golf course plays 6,728 yards from the tee. The weekday rates are outstanding, in the $50 range, and it goes up to $90 on the weekends.

Rancho Bernardo Inn Resort

The Rancho Bernardo Inn Resort Course was originally opened in 1962, a design of William F. Bell. The course recently underwent a multi-million dollar renovation to restore it to four-star status. The course has hosted both PGA and LPGA events over the years, and has a reputation for having US Open quality rough. Green fees are in the resort range: $85-$115.

Riverwalk Golf Club

Formerly the Stardust Country Club, Riverwalk is the result of a Ted Robinson/Ted Robinson Jr. rebuild, restoring this San Diego golf course to its former glory and then some. Re-opening in 1998, the course features 27 holes played in the following combinations: Mission/Friars (6,483 yards), Presidio/Friars (6,627 yards) and Presidio/Mission (6,550 yards). The remodel added some elevation change to the fairways, some scenic waterfalls and new, tougher greens. Fees are in the $35-95 range.

Steele Canyon Golf Club

This Gary Player 27-hole creation is another four-star San Diego area course, located about 20 minutes from downtown in the desert hills of San Diego County. The three sets of nine can be played as follows: Canyon/Meadow (6,672 yards), Canyon/Ranch (6,741 yards) and Ranch/Meadow (7,001 yards). Each set of nine holes offers different terrain, indicated by the names of the courses. Green fees run from $70-$100.

The Meadows Del Mar Golf Club

One of the newest golf courses in San Diego, the Meadows is a Tom Fazio design that opened in 1999. This four-star track features radical elevation changes and unique use of bunkers. Not far from Torrey Pines, the Meadows Del Mar is carved out of the natural landscape of San Diego Counties coastal hills. Green fees are steep but you get what you pay for, from $70-$160.

This is the crown jewel of Southern California golf. Opened in 1957 and designed by William F. Bell, Torrey Pines is the host of the PGA Tour's annual Buick Open. The facility features a North course (6,874 yards) and a South course (7,055 yards), and both tracks feature ocean views to the west and mountains to the north. The views are considered some of the best on any golf course in the world. Green fees are affordable for the quality of Torrey Pines from $95-$150.
