Every great artist has a breakthrough piece. For Igor Stravinsky, it was The Firebird, a 1910 ballet inspired by a series of beloved Russian fairy tales. Set to Stravinsky's captivating score, this classic ballet tells the story of Ivan, who finds himself lost in a dark, dangerous place filled with desperate characters, where a cruel boss rules by fear and intimidation. It is the beautiful, mythical Firebird who first charms and eludes Ivan -- and ultimately saves him. Featuring the work of resident choreographer Elizabeth Wistrich, City Ballet of San Diego presents their take on this masterwork as part of an eclectic program at Spreckels Theatre, which also features George Balanchine's Serenade, the San Diego premiere of Ash, and Samuel Barber Adagio, an award-winning pas de deux crafted by Wistrich in 1990. Musical accompaniment is by The City Ballet Orchestra with John Nettles conducting. There is also a free lecture by artistic director Steven Wistrich 30 minutes before each performance.

Patti Austin made her auspicious debut on the stage of New York City's famed Apollo Theater at the tender age of 4. Just a year later, she'd won her first recording contract with RCA Records. In the '80s, she hit the top of the charts with R&B favorites like "Baby, Come to Me" and "How Do You Keep the Music Playing" with James Ingram, and "It's the Falling in Love" with Michael Jackson. Since then, she's been exploring the jazz genre with her gorgeous voice, and in 2008, after nine Grammy nominations, she took home the award for Best Jazz Vocal Album for her acclaimed release of Avant Gershwin. Now this charismatic cabaret entertainer comes to the Jacobs Music Center's Copley Symphony Hall in San Diego with a concert of well-chosen soul, pop and jazz classics spanning the last several decades through today.

San Diego dancers performing to songs about San Diego written by San Diego songwriters at a San Diego theater. Could this be the most San Diego-centric show of all time?! Here's the story behind this fun, S.D.-lovin' night of dance: In the mid-'70s, local radio station 101 KGB held a contest for local songs about -- you guessed it -- San Diego, with the top 12 tunes featured on an album called Homegrown. San Diego Ballet artistic director Javier Velasco was inspired by the music from this album at a young age, and is now bringing KGB's famous (and, depending on who you ask, infamous) Homegrown album "to rollicking, frolicking life" on the White Box Live Arts Theater stage. Keeping with the nostalgic theme for the night is My Blue Heaven, and Other Songs from Grandma's Player Piano, a wistful look at romances past by emerging choreographer Matt Carney.

Parlez vous francais? Whether you speak the language or not, the San Diego Symphony's concert featuring music by the French masters has something for everyone. From Jean-Phillipe Rameau's exotically mythological opera suite to Gabriel Fauré's darkly suggestive music from a tragic stage melodrama, from Maurice Ravel's bright, brilliant, jazz-tinged Piano Concerto (as performed by French-Canadian Ravel specialist Louis Lortie) to Ibéria, Claude Debussy's fantastic musical "impression" of a Spanish composer, you'll say "oui oui!" to Fabulous France at Jacobs Music Center's Copley Symphony Hall.

Though Michel Briar is a certified master hypnotist, he's never once put a crowd to sleep. They're too busy laughing at his mesmerizing feats where fellow audience members become the stars of the show. Briar has traveled the country performing his mind-boggling mental tricks, bringing hypnotized volunteers to the stage to speak made-up languages, act our bewildering roles and more. If you have ever tried hypnosis and found it lacking, this show at the Ocean Beach Playhouse and Arts Center will turn turns doubters into slack-jawed believers.
